The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has released important updates for SMSF trustees this month. Key reminders include the October quarterly transfer balance account report (TBAR) lodgment deadline and the upcoming closure of the Australia Post SMSF Gateway Service. Here’s what trustees need to know to stay compliant and manage their SMSFs effectively.
October quarterly TBAR lodgment reminder
If your SMSF had transfer balance account events in the last quarter, you must lodge a TBAR by 28 October 2025.
All Self-managed super funds (SMSFs) must report transfer balance account (TBA) events that affect members quarterly by lodging a transfer balance account report (TBAR). These events must be reported quarterly regardless of the member’s total superannuation balance.
TBARs for the October quarter are due by 28 October 2025. If no TBA event has occurred during the quarter, no lodgement is required.
Refer to When to lodge a transfer balance account report for SMSFs and the TBAR instructions when preparing your TBAR.
The easiest way to lodge is through ATO Online Services for Business.
You may need to lodge a TBAR sooner where a member has exceeded their personal transfer balance cap.
Australia Post removing SMSF Gateway Service
If you’re using the Australia Post SMSF Gateway Service, find out what to do before it’s restricted on 30 November 2025.
Australia Post is closing the self-managed super fund (SMSF) Gateway Service to new subscribers. The last day to purchase a subscription will be 29 November 2025. From 30 November 2025, it will no longer be possible to buy or renew subscriptions with Australia Post.
Current subscribers will continue to have access to the service until their subscription expires.
What you need to do
Arrange an alternative service if required
To ensure continued compliance with SuperStream data standards for your SMSF, Australia Post encourages arranging an alternative SMSF messaging service before your subscription expiry date. A list of messaging services can be accessed via the register of SMSF messaging providers.
The service chosen will provide a new electronic service address (ESA) for SMSF contributions, rollovers, and release authorities. The new ESA must be provided to the ATO and any employers making contributions to your SMSF.
Download and save your data
Access to the SMSF Gateway Service will cease when the subscription expires. It is recommended to download and back up any required data before the expiry date.
-
Contributions and rollovers: Download data via the View contributions and View rollovers tabs on the left navigation menu. Perform a search for the desired date range, then click the Save as CSV button once the search is complete.
-
Past invoices: Go to the View past invoices tab and select a PDF to download.
